The travel services division of American Express had more than 240 technology platforms supported by 6,000 technology projects that were being worked on by nearly 10,000 programmers. However, the company lacked a centralized way to track or oversee each initiative. There were many interdependencies between the platforms and projects, and if one failed, it could cause others to fail or their implementation to be delayed. This was an ongoing liability for the company. American Express asked Acquity Group to help them track all of their current platforms and projects.
Acquity Group quickly realized that American Express needed a tool that would contain the current status of each platform and its associated projects to provide management insight. The team conducted over 100 interviews at the company to gain an overall perspective. With this information, the team was able to create an automated, dynamically-updated framework that showed how all projects worked together and identified dependencies. This repository list tapped into the company's various systems of record.
By creating the framework for an automated master repository list, Acquity Group was able to help the company track and oversee all of its technology platforms and projects. This enabled the organization gain a better understanding of its current projects and platforms and, in turn, better plan upcoming projects. Management was able to increase the success of each project, because they now understood how it impacted others, which reduced the company's overall risk. This framework also saved money and resources by reducing redundancies in release and implementation efforts.
