Johnson Controls Automotive Group had more than 130 existing intranet sites filled with information critical for employees to do their jobs. Unfortunately, there was no consistency across sites and employees had to search through multiple sites to find information, if they could locate it at all. The Automotive Group wanted to consolidate the sites into a single effectively categorized repository of information for all employees. Plus, it was looking for ways to better share information and best practices throughout the Johnson Controls global organization.
As an integrated team, Johnson Controls and Acquity Group analyzed the company's existing technology, current processes and employee and budgetary resources. They developed an over-arching plan for the employee portal, and defined the taxonomy that governed how the information was to be classified and accessed. The team applied user-centered design to understand how tools and information were used to perform business tasks. This understanding was then used to efficiently migrate existing sites to the employee portal.
Acquity Group and Johnson Controls successfully built the portal framework, technical foundation, and the first task oriented information and functionality for Johnson Controls' employee development initiative. The team oversaw the integration of several intranet sites into the portal. By assisting Johnson Controls to eliminate non-standard technology, the portal is robust and available to all employees. Also, through the integrated Acquity Group and Johnson Controls team approach, Johnson Controls was able to quickly take on the role of a portal sustaining organization.
